6:48 pm on 18 September 2007

A Tonga policeman has been sentenced to seven years jail after raping and assaulting a woman being held in a police cell.

The Matangi Tonga website reports that the Chief Justice, Anthony Ford, called the crime a heinous and despicable act.

He has also urged the Tonga police to take action against other staff at the Mu'a police station who tried to bribe the victim.

The court found that Latiume Fungavai had assaulted and raped the 25-year-old woman who was being held in custody following an arrest for drunkenness.
