Pacific prepares to mark International Day of Peace

3:21 pm on 20 September 2007

Women's groups across the Pacific are holding a series of events to mark tomorrow's International Day of Peace, and to highlight the critical role that women can play in bringing peace to the region.

The day will feature plays, speeches and vigils, while in Suva a peace garden will be opened.

Sharon Bagwan Rolls, the co-ordinator of Fiji's FemLink, says the day is a global call by peace activists for an end to violence.

"And we hope that will be able to symbolise the collective work of women, because if you just look at the list of peace activities they are coming from predominatly women's groups, to re-affirm our call for non violence as a way of resolving our issues, not just here in Fiji, but at a regional level as well."
