Fiji SDL party welcomes planned lifting of emergency regulations

Fiji's deposed SDL party says it welcomes the planned lifting of the emergency regulations at the end of this week

The public emergency regulations were re-introduced last month with the explanation that the deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, posed a threat to national security.

SDL's national director, Peceli Kinivuwai, says it will be beneficial for Fiji to end the state of emergency.

"We very much think so. It is a good idea, because, in terms of good governance, in terms of freedom of expression, everybody should be able to express their view freely. Because if the views of the majority are known and they are given the opportunity to air their views, that is good governance."
