American Samoa to move fuel tanks from inside Pago Pago Airport

11:30 am on 1 October 2007

The American Samoa House of Representatives has passed a resolution calling on the governor to direct the proper government officials to relocate the jet fuel tanks at Pago Pago International Airport.

Since 2002, the Fono has been urging the Executive Branch to relocate the fuel tanks, from inside the airport vicinity to outside the compound for safety and health reasons.

Lawmakers have described the tanks as "a ticking time bomb."

The Federal Aviation Administration has agreed to fund the relocation project which is expected to get underway in the next couple of weeks.
