The European Union has agreed to resume aid for Fiji's sugar industry as long as the interim administration shows it is working towards holding elections by February 2009.

After months of consultations with Fijian officials, the EU said it would continue aid and cooperation agreements under certain conditions.

Those conditions include the staging of free and fair parliamentary elections within 24 months from March 1, 2007, upholding the 1997 constitution, and ensuring an independent judiciary and the maintenance of human rights standards.

Fiji has also agreed to close cooperation regarding the monitoring and verification of those commitments.
