American Samoa introduces mandatory drug testing bill

11:23 am on 4 October 2007

Drug testing will be mandatory for all American Samoa police, firefighters, prison guards, customs officers, security personnel and court marshals if a bill now before the Senate is passed.

The bill states that applicants for law enforcement positions in the government shall be tested for drugs as a condition of employment.

If an applicant refuses to take the drug test, they would be disqualified for selection and cannot be considered for employment.

The bill says drug test results for law enforcement positions shall be kept confidential and not used as evidence in any criminal prosecution of the applicant.
