Fiji to lift emergency regulations

4:22 pm on 5 October 2007

The Public Emergency Regulation in Fiji is to lifted tomorrow.

Fiji media report this was confirmed by the interim Prime Minister and military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, following a meeting of the National Security Council.

The military council had earlier said it had recommended to the interim Government that the regulation be lifted.

Emergency rule was reinstated last month when the military wanted to gag the ousted prime minister Laisenia Qarase who had returned to Suva from his internal exile.
