Fiji emergency regulations to be lifted at midnight

9:20 am on 6 October 2007

The Public Emergency Regulations imposed on Fiji a month ago will be lifted from midnight tonight.

This has been confirmed by the military spokesman, Lt Col Mosese Tikoitoga.

He says the military council's recommendation to lift the emergency regulations has been endorsed by the interim prime minister, Commodore Bainimarama.

Lt Col Tikoitoga says the military council has assessed that there is no security threat in the country and it does not want to prolong the emergency regulations.

The regulations were aimed the deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and his SDL party spokesman, Peceli Kinivuwai, who were considered to be making inciteful statements.

Both men say they will only comment when the regulations have been lifted.
