Catholic church in CNMI opposes extension of gambling

12:07 pm on 8 October 2007

The Catholic Church in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is opposing a proposal on the ballot, in mid term legislative

elections next month, to permit gambling on the islands of Rota and Saipan.

Priests used their Sunday sermons yesterday to speak out against the initiative.

The priests quoted a pastoral letter from Bishop Tomas A. Camacho urging parishioners to reject this latest attempt by pro-casino proponents to legalize casino gambling on Saipan and Rota.

Tinian is the only island where casino gambling is allowed.

Although five casinos are allowed on Tinian, to date only one, Tinian Dynasty Resort and Casino, is operating.
