Organised crime and domestic violence to be discussed at Pacific police conference

10:34 am on 9 October 2007

Organised crime and domestic violence are on the agenda of the 36th annual Pacific Island Chiefs of Police conference, which begins in Wellington today.

Representatives from 18 Pacific countries and territories will attend the three-day event.

Issues for discussion include recruitment, training, and the processes involved in policing a region covering one third of the globe.

The Pacific Islands Chief of Police Secretariat says there's growing evidence of organised crime, with people using the Pacific to move drugs and contraband.

It says the conference will look at ways for countries to work together to reduce opportunities for criminals to make in-roads into Pacific communities.
