PNG Cabinet Minister gets strong public backing to petition on violence

8:16 pm on 9 October 2007

There was widespread support today when a petition was presented to the Papua New Guinea Parliament calling for legislative changes to end violence against women and children.

The country's only woman MP, Community Development Minister, Dame Carol Kidu, says the level of violence is worsening and Government need to take a proactive approach to dealing with it.

She called on people to dress in black to support the petition and our correspondent in Port Moresby, Alex Rheeney, says thousands responded.

"There were close to a hundred women who were in the public gallery in Parliament in black when she made her statement to Parliament, and there were thousands of Papua New Guineans as well in the streets throughout Port Moresby who were also dressed in black in a show of support for the movement."
