American Samoa Senate asked to sort out scrap metal row

11:30 am on 11 October 2007

The Senate will be looking into complaints raised by a local recycling company concerning the awarding of the American Samoa Power Authority scrap metal yard clean up contract to a Hong Kong company, Good Year Corporation.

Representatives of the joint venture between T&T Recycling and Pacific Enterprises Inc. paid a visit to Senate President Lolo Letalu Moliga last week and presented their concerns.

Those concerns include Good Year's rushed application for their business license, and also allegations of efforts by the Hong Kong company to curry favor with decision makers.

The joint venture was among three companies which bid for the scrap metal contract.

The senate president is referring the matter to the Senate Select Investigative Committee to investigate.
