Fiji economist wants fair deal for Pacific rugby

A leading Fiji economist has called for free trade in rugby following Fiji's outstanding performance at the World Cup.

Dr Wadan Narsey has told Fiji TV that Pacific Islands rugby is not treated fairly by Australia and New Zealand.

He says the best rugby competition in the world, the Super 14, is full of Pacific islanders but Australia and New Zealand do not allow a Pacific islands team to take part, adding that a home match in Fiji would be a huge boost to tourism.

Dr Narsey says Australia and New Zealand are pushing for free trade in all sectors in the Pacific except the one in which the islanders have a comparative advantage.

He says he would like to see free trade in all areas, not just in those that create jobs in Australia and New Zealand.
