Commonwealth representative meets Fiji's interim PM

The chairman of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, Dr Michael Frendo, has visited Fiji to review the political situation.

Dr Frendo, who is Malta's foreign minister, met the interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama before flying on to the Forum .

The Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office, Parmesh Chand said Dr Frendo was updated on issues relating to the independence of the judiciary, human rights, parliamentary democracy and freedom of the media.

He told the Fiji Times the meeting was a very useful and informative.

Mr Chand said Commodore Bainimarama sought understanding from the Commonwealth to move the country forward.

Fiji was suspended from all Commonwealth councils after the military takeover in December last year.
