The Vanuatu government has called for an inquiry into the deaths of three people who fell overboard from an inter-island ferry, MV Southern Star, earlier this month.

The vessel was travelling towards the island of Erromango from Efate when five people fell overboard.

While two were rescued, a middle aged woman and her two children drowned.

The Vanuatu Maritime Authority is reported to have launched a probe into whether the ferry was overloaded with passengers and cargo.
