Fiji opposition leader ignored on appointments to the Boundaries Commission

4:08 pm on 15 October 2007

The opposition leader before last year's coup in Fiji, Mick Beddoes, says he should have been consulted on the appointment of two of the three positions to the Constituency Boundaries Commission.

This Commission will examine the findings from the national census and define the new electoral boundaries.

This task must be completed before Fiji can hold a general election for a return to democracy.

Mr Beddoes says he should have been consulted.

"Based on the constitution I was appointed by his excellency, And in section eighty two, five it says that the office of the opposition will continue when parliament is dissolved."
