An American entrepreneur from Idaho is reported to be planning to build the world's first underwater resort in the lagoon of a private island in Fiji.

The Daily Post newspaper says Bruce Jones' plans include taking an elevator to about 12 metres below the sea surface where a tunnel would connect to 24 luxury private suites.

Mr Jones, who runs a business building personal luxury submarines, says his underwater resort is being built out of steel and thick transparent acrylic in segments in several production locates.

Once in Fiji they will be assembled in a matter of days and will feature a conference room, spa and a wedding chapel.

To be known as Poseidon Mystery Island, its proposed location is believed to be in the lagoon of a private island near Taveuni.
