Fiji calls for New Zealand to immediately end sanctions

7:36 am on 18 October 2007

The interim prime minister of Fiji, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, is calling on New Zealand to immediately end sanctions against the country.

The Commodore, who is attending the Pacific Island Forum leaders summit in Tonga, has pledged to hold elections in the first quarter of 2009.

The Prime Minister, Helen Clark, says she wants Fiji to produce a roadmap towards elections before New Zealand will review its so-called smart sanctions against Fiji's military and their family.

But Commodore Bainimarama says Fiji has done what it needs to do.

"Everything that needs to be done to prepare ourselves for the election has been done completed, the last one was the Commissioning of the boundary of the Commission, that was done the last couple of days, that's it."
