Samoa's Chief Justice, Tiava'asu'e Falefatu Sapolu, has called for the country's authorities to reconsider the penalty for possession of narcotics.
Tiava'asu'e sentenced Joe Lafaele Faulkner or Joe Palagi, to six years and four months in jail based on the maximum penalty of seven years under the current Narcotics Act 1967.
It was the first case in Samoa.
The chief justice says it was a very difficult task for him to consider an appropriate sentence because the maximum penalty in New Zealand for possession of cocaine is life in prison.
