Fiji crime victims call for army role amid police shortcomings

3:46 pm on 18 October 2007

Victims of violent home invasions in Fiji have expressed a lack of faith in the police and are calling for the return of armed soldiers to the streets.

Fiji TV reports that this follows the release of police statistics showing that incidents of robbery with violence, house break-ins and burglaries have decreased in the first nine months of this year.

But victims of home invitations have appeared on television to express their disbelief.

One victim, John Narayan, says on the day his home was invaded several such incidents were taking place across the country and a home owner was murdered.

Another victim this week says police fail to respond when crimes are reported.

Both men are calling for regular street patrols by armed troops.

But the police spokesman, Isikeli Ligairi, says using terror tactics will be counter productive in the long term.
