Two employees in American Samoa's Treasury charged with stealing and fraud

Two former female employees of Treasury in American Samoa will appear in District Court today to answer to charges of stealing and fraud.

The two resigned their positions at the Tax Office and Computer Center after an internal investigation by Treasury uncovered the scheme.

It's believed that within one and a half months, the two, cashed ACTC checques in the amount of $64,000.

They allegedly used Social security numbers of tax filers and falsely filed for Additional Child tax Credit refunds in the names of those filers.

A store employee where the cheques were cashed became suspicious and reported the matter which led to the investigation.
