Fiji's SDL party says there is no way it can be prevented from contest next elections

The deposed Fiji prime minister Laisenia Qarase's SDL party says there is no way it can be prevented from contesting the next general election.

The Daily Post reports that the comment from the SDL's national director, Peceli Kinivuwai, follows suggestions that the People's Charter would prevent the party from contesting the polls because of its policies.

But Mr Kinivuwai says they cannot be stopped because the constitution is still in place.

He says the Charter would be outside the constitution and as a party which believes in upholding the law, they would not support such a promulgation.

Mr Kinivuwai says the SDL's election strategies are already in place and as soon as the dates are announced, they will begin campaigning.

He says individuals who meet the party's requirements are welcome to apply to contest the polls under the SDL's banner.
