New Caledonia's monopoly cement producer says it may cease operations in the territory as its plant in Noumea is being blockaded by a strike.

The Swiss company Holcim has issued the warning after claiming that fundamental rights in the French territory were no longer respected.

The strikers want Holcim to hire more workers and an end to the company's monopoly.

The dispute has crippled the construction industry across the territory.
