The Commonwealth secretary general, Don McKinnon, says he expects to engage in more talks with Fiji's interim prime minister soon to help in taking the country back to democracy.
Mr McKinnon has told Radio Legend that he had a good one-on-one discussion with Commodore Frank Bainimarama in Tonga and they will continue to hold dialogue.
He says there is some common ground they can work on and it is his job to do what he can to speed up the process.
He says they had agreed to talk some more and that may happen within the next week to ten days, although it may not be face to face.
Mr McKinnon says the Commonwealth's deadline for elections in countries which have had a coup is two years and in Fiji's case this would be December next year.
But he says this could be extended to Commodore Bainimarama's timeline of March 2009 if Commonwealth leaders feel that progress is being made throughout next year.
