SPREP says Solomons dolphin exports go against conservation agreement

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Programme, or SPREP, says the export of dolphins from Solomon Islands is contrary to the intent of a regional agreement on cetacean conservation signed last year.

The agreement was also signed by Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Star says SPREP's director Asterio Takesi pointed this out at a regional conservation conference in Papua New Guinea.

Last week, Solomons Islands exported 28 live dolphins to Dubai despite opposition from environmental groups.

The Solomons fisheries minister, Nollen Leni, has defended the export, saying the government and the local exporter broke no law.
