French Polynesian students comment on anniversary

The French Polynesian student union says as the territory's university is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary, students face challenges in accommodation and transport.

The union issued a statement just days before a scheduled visit to the university by the French minister in charge of overseas territories, Christian Estrosi.

The union has also criticised the local politicians for the instability caused by them changing sides.

It has described the French reform plan, which includes an early election in January, as a step backwards that calls into question French Polynesia's autonomy.

The union says it doubts the current plan and the elections will bring about the intended stability.
