Tokelau votes to remain New Zealand colony

5:30 pm on 25 October 2007

The people of Tokelau have voted to remain a colony of New Zealand.

The results of a vote which would have seen Tokelau become self-governing in free association with New Zealand were released a short time ago.

The change in status failed to get the necessary two-thirds of the votes.

This is the second time in 20 months that Tokelauans voted in a referendum on the three atolls' status.
