Solomons police consider charging TI head over corruption claim

2:33 pm on 29 October 2007

The Police Commissioner in Solomon Islands says he'll consider pressing charges over a claim about rising corruption in the country's police force.

Jahir Khan says he's amazed by the allegation, which was made by the executive officer of the anti-corruption watchdog, Transparency Solomon Islands.

Joses Tuhanuku says the government's opposition to RAMSI is encouraging corrupt officers to return to their old ways, which includes letting people off charges.

Mr Khan says his detectives will get a statement from Mr Tuhanuku outlining his claims this week.

He says if the allegations are baseless, he will consider laying charges, which could include defamation and making false allegations against police officers.

He says he has heard no evidence to suggest there is any corruption within the police, but people in the Solomon Islands should know his door is always open.

"If they have any grievances about the police force or any illegal things that are going on that I'm not aware of they should feel free to come and see me, or give me a telephone call, or write to me and tell me what are the issues that they're concerned about and I'll definitely investigate."
