Call to review American Samoan immigration and customs system

2:16 pm on 2 November 2007

The American Samoan member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, wants the investigative arm of Congress, the General Accountability Office, to comprehensively review the territory's immigration and customs systems.

American Samoa has its own immigration and customs laws and does not come under the US system.

Among the issues the Congressman wants the review to address is why US immigration and customs laws were never made applicable to American Samoa.

The study would also look at the sponsorship of foreigners and whether the territory has the capacity to enforce its own customs and immigration laws.,

The request for a GAO study comes as the Attorney General's Office is conducting a large scale investigation into possible fraud and corruption at the Immigration Office.
