Fiji chief accused of assaulting Commodore Bainimarama's youngest son

A high chief of Bau in Fiji, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, has pleaded guilty to assaulting the youngest son of interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Ratu Epenisa Cakobau has also pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour for causing a commotion at the Central Police Station after his arrest.

The Suva magistrate's court was told that the assault occurred in a nightclub in the capital two months ago when there was an exchange of words between the 47-year old chief and 21-year old Meli Bainimarama who is a soldier.

Meli Bainimarama sustained injuries in the assault.

Magistrate John Semisi will sentence Ratu Epenisa Cakobau next week.
