New Caledonia's oldest pro-independence party, the Caledonian Union, has elected Charles Pidjot as its new President.

The election took place during the party's 38th annual congress, which this year took place on the island of Mare.

Mr Pidjot replaces Pascal Naouna, who was also a candidate for another term after six years at the helm of the party.

Mr Pidjot received 96 votes to Mr Naouna's 83.
