Saipan votes against legalised gambling, while Rota approves

Voters in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas have again rejected a proposal to introduce casino gaming in Saipan.

57 percent of voters approved the Saipan Casino Act initiative but a two-thirds majority would have been needed for it to pass.

The proposal was first rejected in 1979.

The island of Rota, however, voted for the gambling initiative, with only 15 percent of electorate objecting to it.

Tinian was previously the only CNMI island to have legalised casino gaming.
