The Pacific Centre for Public Integrity has called for Fiji's Police Commissioner to retract his allegations of NGO involvement with foreign governments in the alleged plot.
This follows the military and police crackdown in connection with an alleged assassination plot against the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
The PCPI's Angie Heffernan says that the Prime Minister's statement that governments of Australia and New Zealand are not involved in any such plots render the Commissioner Esala Teleni's earlier allegations baseless.
Ms Heffernan says Commissioner Teleni should publicly apologise to NGOs for making false allegations about them in public.
"While he's not named PCPI, last night my parents had a visit by military officers, and we believe these allegations against the NGOs were deliberately done to slur the reputation of NGOs such as ours who have been actively pursuing and working on a return to democracy."
