Fiji police charge another suspect in alleged assassination plot

11:22 am on 7 November 2007

Fiji police have charged another suspect with conspiracy to commit murder and incitement to mutiny.

Radio Legend reports that the assistant police commissioner crime, Nasir Ali, has confirmed that the suspect charged will appear in court this morning together with 10 others who were in court late yesterday and were remanded in custody last night.

Mr Ali has also confirmed that the national director of the SDL party, Peceli Kinivuwai, was released together with three others yesterday because there was insufficient evidence against them.

But they may be taken in for questioning again if police find further evidence to charge them.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Peacekeepers Association has denied any involvement in the alleged plot to assassinate members of the interim government and senior military officers.

Its president, Taniela Senikuta, says the association is sad and disappointed that former senior officers and special forces troops were implicated in the plot.

Mr Senikuta says the majority of the population has accepted the events of December last year and feels it is time to move on with their lives.
