Suspect in Fiji alleged assassination case to seek medical treatment in New Zealand

The lawyer for a New Zealand citizen detained in Fiji for his alleged involvement in an assassination conspiracy says he will seek medical treatment in New Zealand for his client.

Tevita Fa says Ballu Khan suffered serious injuries during his arrest on Saturday and has a broken jaw and some broken ribs.

He has been in Suva's Colonial War Memorial Hospital under guard since.

Mr Fa says he will apply to the Fiji police and the military today to have Khan discharged from hospital so he can be evacuated to New Zealand for treatment.

Mr Fa says he will also apply for Khan to be released from police custody because he has not been charged.

Police say they are waiting for Khan to be discharged from hospital so they can question him and lay charges.

Meanwhile, Khan's partner, Agnes Bulatiko, says Khan did not resist arrest when he was stopped at a roadside checkpoint on Saturday and Police Commissioner Teleni's claims are lies.
