PNG Western Highlands hit by flooding

5:41 pm on 8 November 2007

Hundreds of villagers in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands Province have had to flee to higher ground when flooding washed away houses and food gardens following recent heavy rains.

About 100 families in the North Wahgi district were left homeless and face food shortages after the Mombol River overflowed, washing away 22 houses and a church and drowning livestock and crops.

Displaced villagers have sought shelter in neighbouring villages and are appealing to provincial and national authorities for relief supplies.

The local MP Benjamin Mul said he could not give the villagers any money to help them as there was only 12 US dollars in the district's trust account.
