Japan Airlines is scheduled to fly 49 charter flights to Rota in the Northern Marianas next year carrying an estimated 7,000 tourists.

The Commonwealth Ports Authority says JAL will use Boeing 737 airlines for the service.

The Marianas Variety newspaper reports that the flights were to start in January, but CPA has not acquired all the necessary airport equipment to handle the flights.

Rota lawmakers have asked CPA to expedite the acquisition of the $800,000 in equipment.
