Samoa coconut oil to be used for new Body Shop product

Samoa will be the first Pacific nation to export organic virgin coconut oil to Britain this week to supply the cosmetic giant, the Body Shop International.

The oil, which is produced with support of a local NGO, Women in Business Development, will be used for a new product range to be launched next year.

The NGO's president, Sheree Stehlin, says it has taken six months to develop a working relationship with the cosmetic company.

"They went around two islands, and they saw how we worked, and it was just what they wanted. That is how they sell their products, as a community trade thing, the money goes to the farm gate. We are sending our first lot over this week. So it's great, it's a first, it's a wonderful achievement, we are very proud."

Sheree Stehlin says the NGO plans to send three tonnes of oil to Britain before the end of the year.
