More than 60 employees in the executive branch of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, including at least two special assistants of the governor, have been told their jobs will not be extended beyond December the 22nd.

The Marianas Variety newspaper says contracts which will not be renewed include those of special assistant for disabilities programmes, Thomas Camacho, and the special assistant for trade and economic affairs Richard A. Pierce.

Earlier, the governor said the names of the department heads to be retained would be announced in January.

The governor's special advisor for administration, Esther Fleming, says the government cannot pay the salaries of its current workforce because of the low tax take.
