Fiji's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has written to the prime ministers of Australia and New Zealand asking them to lift their travel restrictions.

Fiji TV reports that the president's request is revealed in a letter he has written to individuals inviting them to become members of the National Council for Building a Better Fiji.

The travel bans have stopped many people from joining the interim administration or boards and bodies set up by it such as the National Council.

To attract the best calibre of people, President Iloilo has asked Australia and New Zealand to lift their travel restrictions and bans, if not generally then at least specifically to facilitate the work of the People's Charter which will be drawn up by the National Council.

President Iloilo says in view of Fiji's serious social, economic and political problems, it is time for people to come forward to rebuild the nation.

He says the work of the National Council will result in the People's Charter for Change and Progress which will provide the foundation within which future elected governments will be expected to operate.

The membership of the National Council has been increased by 5 to 45, of whom 34 will be from outside the government and 11 from the government.
