Fiji police pushing to file charges against Ballu Khan

11:18 am on 16 November 2007

Fiji police are racing against time to file charges against New Zealand national Ballu Khan who is a suspect in the alleged conspiracy to assassinate key figures.

Mr Khan's 48-hour custody period since his discharge from hospital ends at 11.00am today.

But the deputy police commissioner, Eroni Antonio, says his officers know that time is against them and it is possible charges may not be laid by the deadline.

He told Fiji TV that the suspect's interrogation had to be suspended several times because of his medical condition.

Police yesterday executed a search warrant at Ballu Khan's Suva home in connection with their investigations and seized several bags full of items as well as knives and coils of rope.

Mr Khan's lawyer, Tevita Fa, says a New Zealand QC, Peter Williams will arrive in Suva today to help with the defence.
