First of this season's cyclones appears in Coral Sea

A tropical cyclone is lying about 180 kilometres south of the Papua New Guinea coast.

Tropical cyclone Guba, a category one storm was named by the Papua New Guinea Meteorology Service on Tuesday.

Guba has become the first cyclone in the Pacific for the cyclone season.

A senior forecaster at the New Zealand Met office, Leigh Matheson, says the cyclone is sitting in the north eastern part of the Coral sea.

"It's current position is located at 10-point-8 South, 146-point-2 East, and is expected to move slowly south in the next 24 hours and slowly intensify."
