Marshall Islands polling extended for late opening booths

8:31 pm on 19 November 2007

Chaos during the Marshall Islands elections which has seen some polling stations not opening until this afternoon has led to an extension of the poll.

Our correspondent in Majuro, Giff Johnson, puts the delays down to incompetence.

He says the Attorney General has agreed to extend the time some stations can stay open.

"They have reacted to the problem of the late opening of the polling stations by saying that they ones that opened late will stay open later and will simply get their 12 hours in. So the ones that opened at 1pm will shut down at one am."
