Fiji regime election criteria expected to soften

2:33 pm on 20 November 2007

With a cabinet reshuffle under way in Fiji this week, the former opposition leader, Mick Beddoes, says he expects all those who emerge will be allowed to stand in the next elections.

Previously, the interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has said temporary ministers must step down in the next few months if they want to stand for parliament in 2009..

Mr Beddoes says he expects even those restrictions will be watered down:

"I'm not expecting the interim administration to honour any of its obligations. I'm expecting that every single one that is in the interim Cabinet after their reshuffle will be eligible to stand and will stand and will stand straight from being an interim Cabinet in a caretaker situation prior to the election."
