7:26 am on 21 November 2007

The US Geological Survey says a quake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck the remote Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake, which hit late last night, was some 77 kilometres south of Arawa, at a depth of 73 kilometres.

Papua New Guinea sits on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire".

The region is frequently rocked by earthquakes.
