6.6 undersea earthquake near Solomon Islands

8:32 am on 28 November 2007

There has been a 6.6 magnitude undersea earthquake near Solomon Islands, but people there say it was a short shake and there's no damage.

The United States Geological Survey says the quake happened south-east of Kira Kira, just after midnight.

At a depth of more than 40 kilometres it did not pose a tsunami threat.

The Solomon Islands is frequently jolted by earthquakes as it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is prone to earthquakes and volcanoes, and in April was hit by a tsunami caused by an undersea quake which killed dozens and smashed villages.
