International telephone charges in Fiji have been cut as competition between two sister local companies heats up.
On Monday the internet service provider, Connect, introduced a tariff of 15-US cents a minute for calls to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and Britain.
Although routed through the internet, these calls can be made using normal landline phones provided the customers have also signed up for its broadband service.
Yesterday Telecom Fiji introduced a charge of 19-US cents a minute to the same destinations for all its landline customers whether they have broadband or not.
The new Telecom service will end on December 15th and it is not yet known whether a new, permanent competitive rate will be introduced.
