In American Samoa, construction of a separate detention facility for female detainees and inmates has begun.

Prison warden Fuega Moliga says the female detention centre will be fenced off from the rest of the prison grounds and be run as a separate facility.

The new one-storey facility, which is expected to take 7 months to complete, will house a maximum of 50 people.

There are presently 12 women inmates at the Tafuna Correctional Facility.
