The Suva High Court has ordered the Fiji Times newspaper to pay the interim cabinet minister, Lekh Ram Vyashnoi, nearly 19-thousand US dollars in damages for defamation.

The award is for articles and letters to the editor published in the Fiji Times between 1999 and 2003.

Mr Vyashnoi had filed his first case for defamation in 1999 and another in 2005.

There were 12 occasions when Mr Vyashnoi claimed he was defamed.

He had sought 200-thousand US dollars in damages but Justice Jiten Singh found he was defamed on 5 occasions only and awarded 19-thousand US dollars.

The Fiji Times says it will appeal the ruling.
