West Papuan flag raising outside Indonesian Embassy in Australia

2:45 pm on 30 November 2007

Members and supporters of the West Papuan community in Australia have raised the Morning Star Flag in a rally outside the Indonesian embassy in Canberra this morning.

The rally was planned to draw attention to the human rights situation in Indonesia's Papua region, a day before West Papuan National Flag Day on December 1.

The Morning Star flag represented the territory of West Papua from December 1961 until October 1962 when the territory came under the administration of the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority.

Raising the Morning Star is officially considered a criminal act in Indonesia, with at least one Papuan serving a 15 year prison sentence for hoisting the flag.
